Banana Fig Breakfast Smoothie

Yesterday was an eh sort of day.  Work was fine and I made it to yoga, which is always a positive thing. I posted and got a an awesome goodie box from Chobani.

Funnily (my favorite non-word) enough, my post was about them. Lovely coincidence :)

But I was just having an off day. My mind just would not calm through out my practice. I couldn’t stop thinking about everything from dinner, to my resume, to which way I should move/how high should I lift my leg, should I walk or subway home… Lately, I have not had a problem getting to yoga and just letting go. I used to always be thinking and not just being there flowing/moving on my mat.

Then, I had trouble getting to sleep too. And although I’ve been going to bed pretty late since bb has been away, I have not had the issues falling asleep that I had been experiencing earlier this year.

But today is a new day right? I woke up a listened to some music, instead of flipping on the TV. I’ve been trying to rediscover my love for music. I used to listen to it in the car and that was my me time, but being in NYC and not driving I’ve sort of missed out it.

A banging breakfast is always a great way to start the day. I’ve been craving a good smoothie. I’ve been a good roommate staying away from the blender, but not today.

Figs have been part of breakfast every day since last Thursday! In pancakes, on oats, over yogurt. Yum!!!

Today they are got blended with some banana and my favorite spices cinnamon and cardamom. Two weeks ago I also made Laura’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Dough Smoothie – I love the nutty addition of the nutritional yeast, so I adopted that for this smoothie too.

{Super Thick} Banana and Fig Breakfast Smoothie

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup liquid (I do 1/2 unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 water)
  • 1 scoop protein powder (sunwarrior vanilla)
  • 1/4 cup raw old fashion oats
  • 1 tablespoon flax meal
  • 1/2 banana (frozen or not)
  • 2 -3 large figs (I blended 2 and sliced another on top)
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon maca powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon guar/xantham gum (optional)

Directions:

  1. Combine everything in blender and blend away!
  2. Pour into cutest ball jar/bowl you have (I did the ball jar so for easy transportation to work)
  3. Top and enjoy!

You could opt to leave out the flax/oats, guar gum and such for a lighter, more drinkable shake. I just get more pleasure out of thick smoothie with toppings that don’t sink :)

I have yoga on schedule again for today – I will relax this time dang it!!

Aaaand I was told this weekend by an employee at David’s Tea to come back today because their fall line of teas are back. Hello Pumpkin Chai!

    • Oooh so good to know they freeze well! Im gooing to have to stock up. Figs and cherries need to be stock piled a frozen.
      I can’t wait for Heathers meatless monday with figs.

  2. I’ve been loving figs lately – would’ve never thought to put them in a smoothie!!

    • They are perfect for added thickness and natural sweetness! No other sweetener needed btw figs and banana. Hope you try it!

  3. I want to like figs so badly, but I just don’t! Maybe I’ll blend them up and see how it goes…

  4. I’m with Katie…I tried fresh figs for the first time last year and was so…disappointed! I LOVE dried figs (and actually think they can be a bit TOO sweet) so I couldn’t understand why they didn’t win me over. I’ve been spying them at all the grocery stores lately so I’ve been thinking about giving them another shot…plus, this smoothie sounds incredible!
